What will be in the course?

Stage 1 Visual Art combines practical art making with critical thinking, research, and reflection. Students explore how artists communicate ideas and meaning while developing their own visual language and individual creative direction.

The course focuses on the development of ideas through investigation, practical experimentation and refinement. Students work with a range of materials, techniques and processes to create resolved practical outcomes, while strengthening their ability to make informed artistic decisions and purposeful creative choices.

A written component is an important part of the course, including annotation, analysis and reflection on both artist research and personal practical work. Students explain their decision-making, document the progress of their work, and evaluate how their ideas develop throughout the creative process.

Assessment is completed through three areas: Folio, Practical and Visual Study. A strong emphasis is placed on refinement, independence, and the ability to connect ideas, process and final outcomes. These subject suits students who enjoy creative challenge, thoughtful problem-solving, and expressing ideas through both practical and written work.
