ELC, Term 2 Week 6

ELC-Y’s Term 2 Learning Journey

In Term 2 our overarching idea involves exploring ‘Our Planet’; an inquiry into our world, how it works, and how we can look after it. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, our educators have been observing the children to gather information about their interests, ideas, and questions. This information has shaped the journey our learning is taking through the lens of our ‘Our Planet’.

The ELC-Y children set up a veterinary practice in Term 1. There continued to be a lot of discussion about animals, particularly pets who had visited the vet, or children whose family had welcomed a new pet, and even stories from Lily, about her puppy Hector, graduating from puppy preschool! We have enjoyed sharing photos of our pets, the pets of family members and friends, and talking and reading books about our favourite animals. We wondered if there are any pets in the School other than ‘Sticky’, our class stick insect. On one of our much loved ‘Adventure Walks’ we found a turtle and fishpond in the Junior School, which we have now visited several times and were even invited by the Science Lab team to feed the turtles and fish. We have also visited the Science Labs and met the hopping mice, bearded dragons, and frogs living there. Our visits have led to discussions about animal care, animal anatomy and life cycles, and animal habitats.

Our friend Harrison has also led some wonderful learning by sharing his vast knowledge of recycling with us. He shared books and pamphlets from home and we gathered books from the library to learn more about different ways we can recycle. We visited the waste sorting area at school, which the children have lovingly named ‘Bin Lane’ and are learning about sorting waste and what happens to it at recycling plants and composting facilities. The children are eager to learn more about how small changes, such as reusing our unnamed artwork and sorting lunch box scraps, can make a big difference to our planet.

Parent Portal and Medical Information

ELC parents are asked to ensure that their contact details and other important information on the Parent Portal are current. It is essential that children’s health and medication information, immunisation and emergency contact details are kept up to date. Please check the Permissions tab for the BuzzBook if you would like other parents to be able to find your contact details. If you have any difficulties accessing the parent portal, please see Ali Blake or Kass Woods for assistance. In addition, if your child has a medical management plan for asthma, allergies, anaphylaxis or other medical condition, which has recently been updated, please ensure that you have provided a copy to the ELC.

 ELC Mid Year Finishing Dates

Thank you to the parents of Mid Year Reception children who have advised us of their child’s final day of attendance at ELC. We remind parents that 4 weeks’ notice is required as per ELC terms and conditions. Please be aware that children are required to attend their final week of ELC for Child Care Subsidy to be applied. Mid year Reception children are welcome to attend ELC over the school holiday period to Thursday 20 July, noting that the ELC will be closed on Friday 21 July and Monday 24 July.
