ELC, Term 1 Week 11

Bugs and Slugs

This week we have had a bunny, bugs and slugs visit the ELC! Inspired by the children’s recent interest in Monarch caterpillars and butterflies, the ELC children participated in The Bug Show incursion, offering them the chance to learn about invertebrates and to see them up close. The children started by looking at a rabbit and thinking about what an animal is..

“They breathe” said Mitchell.

“They grow and drink water” said Olivia K.

They heard about animals with and without spines, looked at a model spine, moved their own bodies to see what their spines could do and thought about bones…

“Bugs and slugs don’t have spines” Bobbie told us.

“They are different because slugs can grow and then they turn into snails with hard shells” said Bailey.

“We have bones inside our body” said Belinda.

“Bunnies can’t fly because they don’t have wings or muscles” suggested Ava.

“Pterodactyls can fly” said Harrison D.

The group had the chance to look at many different live invertebrates, to compare the creatures and think about grouping and classification, and were fascinated by how many kinds of invertebrates there are in the world!
