Support for individual learners
ILPs and Student Support in the Senior School
Support for individual learners occurs in the Senior School. Students who have been working with the support of an ILP (Individual Learning Plan) in Middle School, can be assured adjustments to curriculum and assessment and support from inclusive education staff will continue. The Pulteney model of inclusive classroom support operates in Years 10, 11 and 12, where students can expect to access the support of inclusive education staff members in their regular timetabled classes.
Flexibilities of the SACE
In Senior School, students select subjects that are aligned to their interests and capabilities and with their future pathways. The SACE offers multiple pathways to cater to different learning styles and aspirations. The SACE allows for flexibility in assessment methods, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in various ways. This can include written assignments, exams, practical demonstrations, group projects or presentations, multi-modal elements, depending on the subject and the student’s preferences and strengths. The SACE Board entrusts these decisions to the expert teaching staff at a school site.
Special Provisions in the SACE
The SACE has a policy for Special Previsions that schools refer to and arrange as required. Special Provisions are reasonable adjustments in curriculum and assessment that enable eligible students to participate in SACE curriculum and assessment on the same basis as other students. They are designed to ensure that no student is disadvantaged due to disability, misadventure or circumstances beyond their control. Adjustments might, for example, include; extension of a deadline, additional time for a test or examination, the use of a reader or scribe, an adjustment to font size or paper colour or the use of assistive technology. Special Provisions in the SACE require a formal application process facilitated through the school.

Flinders University Extension Studies (Flinders University Extension Program)
The Extension Studies Program provides a taste of university life for high-achieving South Australian Year 12 students, while also giving the opportunity to extend their SACE studies. Students accepted into Extension Studies can choose to replace or supplement their Year 12 subjects with university subjects. University grades are recorded, and students are able to credit these grades towards their SACE Stage 2 studies and ATAR, as a Recognised Studies subject.
Participation requires considerable commitment (10-15 hours a week). It is best-suited to students who have the maturity to adjust to a university-style environment, where significant independent learning is required. Students can enrol in a maximum of one university topic per semester while completing Year 12.
Each course offered through Extension Studies is the equivalent of a SACE Stage 2, 10-credit subject. It’s important to note that SACE have approved all Flinders University Extension Studies courses for inclusion in SACE Recognised Learning, however there are some combinations of subjects that are precluded with current Year 12 subjects. Please ensure that you check all course selections to ensure you are not choosing a precluded combination.
Extension Studies students may also receive credit towards their university degree if they enrol in a Flinders University course after attending Pulteney Grammar, enabling them to complete their university study early or study a wider range of courses than usual. Successful Extension Studies applicants will receive a 50% scholarship from Flinders University, reducing the cost of the course. The student/family will be required to cover the remaining costs. Successful applicants will be exempt from the student services and amenities fee for one course per semester.
- Who can apply for Extension Studies?
Extension Studies is designed for high-achieving and self-motivated students. There is a detailed application process that Year 11 students need to adhere to, should they wish to apply. Please note that a minimum B grade in all subjects, including any accelerated Stage 2 subjects, is required. In the first instance, students need to complete a Pulteney Grammar application form, outlining their study and career path. Students also need to submit a 250-word personal statement, outlining why they want to pursue the Extension Studies program, what their motivating factors for their selected Extension Studies subjects are, their plans for 2027 and beyond, and how their Extension Studies subjects support this pathway.
- Process for selection to Extension Studies:
Pulteney Grammar’s standard for the selection process for Extension Studies is purposely set high to ensure that students can successfully combine their SACE and university studies. While students undertake the course independently, schools are required to provide a recommendation which is why it is crucial that we have a rigorous selection process; exemplary behaviour and attitude are also expectations.
Once applications have been received, the Head of Senior School and the Coordinator of Futures will meet to review the applications and following the criteria, decide which applications will be endorsed through the school to apply to the Extension Studies program. Other subject experts may also be involved in this process.
Entrance is competitive and the final decision is solely managed and awarded at the discretion of Flinders University.
