What will be in the course?
Stage 1 Design: Architectural and Industrial Design focuses on designing purposeful solutions for the built and manufactured world.
Students explore areas such as architecture, interior design, furniture, product and environmental design, developing ideas that respond to human needs, function and experience. Using design thinking and iterative processes, students investigate, prototype and refine concepts through sketching, modelling, and material experimentation. They develop practical and technical skills while learning to consider form, function, sustainability, and user interaction within their designs. Students are encouraged to solve complex problems creatively, think spatially and critically, and develop innovative responses to real-world design challenges. The course supports increasing independence and learner agency, while providing valuable foundations for pathways in architecture, product and industrial design and related creative industries.
Assessment is completed through three areas:
- Folio
- Practical, and
- Visual Study
A strong emphasis is placed on problem-solving, refinement, and the ability to connect research, process, and final design outcomes. This subject suits students who enjoy creative and analytical thinking, working with purpose, and designing solutions for real-world contexts.
