Industrial Design is a hands-on, workshop-based subject where students design, prototype and produce functional products using both traditional materials (particularly timber) and contemporary fabrication technologies. Building on foundational making skills developed in Year 9, students work through increasingly complex design challenges that require creative thinking, problem solving and iterative refinement. Students who thrived in Art Tech (Year 9) are well-suited to this course.
Students develop confidence using workshop tools, machinery and digital fabrication processes such as laser cutting and 3D printing, while also gaining a deeper understanding of craftsmanship, timber construction, material behaviour and user-centred design. Projects may respond to real-world contexts, community needs or exhibition opportunities, encouraging students to design with purpose and intent.
This subject pathway supports students interested in product design, architecture, engineering, fabrication, furniture, entrepreneurship and creative problem solving, while also providing strong pathways into Stage 1 and Stage 2 Design and Design, Technology and Engineering.
