What will be in the course?
Students work on four major assessment tasks to build skills and knowledge surrounding three key areas of study: Understanding Dance, Creating Dance, and Responding to Dance. Students progress their technique and performance skills through learning various dance combinations and choreography across a range of genres and dance styles that are performed to a live audience. In addition, students engage in research and analysis of dance in diverse contexts, evaluate and refine their own creative works as an artist, and develop their knowledge and understanding of dance skills, dance elements, structural devices, and production elements. They learn how to communicate choreographic intent through composition and performance, and work towards improving their personal development as a dancer.
How will I be assessed?
School Assessment (70%)
Assessment Type 1: Performance Portfolio (40%) – Length: 10 minute video
Students learn, refine and present a variety of dance pieces covering a range of genres in negotiation with the teacher. They perform their work to a live (or online) audience showcasing their technical, expressive, and practical skills in line with the appropriate performance standards. From the recorded performance, they select their best work to create a 10 minute video portfolio. The portfolio includes group routines plus a 1 minute (minimum) solo, duo or trio piece.
Assessment Type 2: Dance Contexts (30%)
Part 1: Choreography Film – Length: Maximum 3 minutes
Students select, research and explore their chosen context or contexts as a catalyst for the creation of their own self-devised dance work. They work through the choreographic process to create a final product that is recorded and presented as a dance film.
Part 2: Choreographic Analysis – Written – Max 1000 words / Multimodal – Max 6 mins
The choreographic analysis is based on the recording the student has created. It draws on the evaluation and critique of the final product and process, as well as the connection between the initial research/motivation and choreography, the use and effectiveness of elements of dance, choreographic devices, and production elements, as well as the analysis of choreographic intent.
External Assessment (30%)
Assessment Type 3: Skills Development Portfolio (30%) – Written – Max 2000 words / Multimodal – Max 12 mins
Students research, design, and implement a personal training program based on their chosen skill of development. Their research should include the complexities of the skill and reflect an understanding of anatomy, biomechanics and safe dance practice. Once the student has
established their program, they will carry out the training with regular documentation of their progress and formal analysis. This includes photo and video evidence, and feedback from their teacher. The portfolio should use appropriate dance terminology and enable students to demonstrate evidence of their ability to research a specific area of interest that pertains to their personal development as a dancer, apply their established knowledge, and reflect on their personal development.
