What will be in the course?

Year 10 Creative Arts (Photography) combines practical image-making with critical thinking, analysis, and reflection. Students explore how photographers communicate ideas through visual language while developing their own creative style and technical confidence.

The course focuses on building skills through a structured practical cycle, where students plan, shoot, edit, and reflect on a range of photographic styles and techniques. This includes experimenting with camera settings, lighting (including studio and Baroque-inspired techniques), composition, and digital editing processes using software such as Lightroom.

Students also develop their ability to analyse images using a structured approach, helping them understand how visual elements such as light, composition, and colour create meaning and mood. This understanding is then applied to their own work, allowing them to make more intentional and informed creative decisions.

A folio component is an important part of the course, where students document their ideas, research, experimentation, and refinement. This includes exploring the work of other photographers and artists, developing concepts, trialling techniques, and reflecting on their progress.

Assessment is based on three key areas: Practical Cycles, Visual Study, and Folio. A strong emphasis is placed on experimentation, technical development, and the ability to connect ideas, process, and final outcomes. Students are encouraged to take creative risks, solve problems, and refine their work through ongoing reflection and feedback.

This subject suits students who enjoy working creatively with technology, experimenting with visual ideas, and developing both practical and analytical skills in photography.
