Summer and Winter Sports Awards

Last Wednesday, the Summer and Winter Sports Awards were held at school, with over 400 attendees coming together to celebrate the sporting achievements of our Middle and Senior School students.

At Pulteney, we believe in fostering opportunities for every student to engage in positive sporting experiences. By doing so, we aim to instill a lifelong commitment to physical activity and sport. Our goal is to create an environment where students feel a sense of belonging and are encouraged to grow and develop both mentally and tactically, regardless of their skill level.

Through Pulteney Sport, students gain practical life skills that extend far beyond their school years. These skills include organisation, teamwork, resilience, the value of process over outcome, stepping outside comfort zones, and the significance of camaraderie and mateship.

Our tiered approach supports students’ varying levels of talent and aspirations, offering pathways that include lifestyle sports, participation sports, and elite talent academies.

During the evening, awards were presented in three categories for each team:

  • MVP (Most Valuable Player)
  • Coaches’ Award
  • Team Player Award

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the award winners and express our gratitude to the coaches, staff, and parents for their continued support and dedication.

Basketball

What began with just a couple of girls showing interest and the initial challenge of pulling together nominations blossomed into a remarkable Term 4 season for girls’ basketball. By the end of the season, we had two teams and nearly 20 girls actively participating—a testament to the growth and enthusiasm surrounding the sport.

Our middle girls’ team, comprised mainly of Year 6s and 7s, delivered an extraordinary performance, going undefeated throughout the season. Their largest margin of victory was an impressive 51-0. While our focus wasn’t solely on wins and losses, the girls’ success highlights the value of their hard work and dedication.

The senior girls’ team, featuring mostly Year 10s and a few Year 9s stepping up, faced a tougher start. Many of the players had little to no prior basketball experience. Week by week, we concentrated on specific aspects of the game—defensive positioning, offensive movement, and strategies for beating defenders. Progress came steadily, with margins narrowing each round until we celebrated our first win in the second-to-last game.

To cap off the season, the girls faced Immanuel, a powerhouse team. Undaunted by the challenge, they played with determination and grit in a nail-biting game. A last-second shot secured a thrilling one-point victory, bringing their final record to two wins and three losses—an outstanding achievement for a team with limited experience.

This season marked a fantastic step in rebuilding the girls’ basketball program, and we look forward to a full return in 2025 with even greater momentum.

Volleyball

The volleyball season wrapped up over the weekend, with plenty of highlights despite the higher-than-usual temperatures. The middle school boys’ A team fought valiantly against a strong Blackfriars side but narrowly missed out on victory, with a few mental errors proving costly. Meanwhile, the middle B team showed resilience, bouncing back from a first-set loss to claim the match 2 sets to 1.

The girls’ teams faced a challenging end to their season, grappling with injuries and unavailability. Many players stepped up, often playing two games each week to ensure the teams could compete. Their determination and commitment shone through, and finishing the season with two hard-earned wins is a testament to their effort and teamwork.

Looking ahead, our volleyballers are now gearing up for the Australian Volleyball Schools Championships on the Gold Coast, where three school teams will compete. Preparations are well underway, including a referee accreditation course and a preparation match against Woodcroft this week. Excitement is building for what promises to be a fantastic end-of-year competition!

Year 6 Come and Try Rowing

The Year 6 programme recently concluded with a mini regatta and BBQ at the Torrens. A big thank you current to rowers Eloise Clarke, Maggie Cannon, Edie Chapman, Chris Li, Christiana Staniszewski, James Bedson, Lachie Bedson, and coaches Bill, Brooklyn, Emma, Alastair, Josh, Jacob, Xavier, Beck and Mr Brown who assisted at the regatta and trainings.

It was amazing to see nine Pulteney boats racing over 400m. The large crowd of family and friends were impressed by the energy and enthusiasm shown by our newest rowers.

Thank you to the Pulteney Boat Club parents who provided support for the regatta. The smell of freshly cooked sausages drew a crowd of hungry young rowers who made short work of what was offered.

The Pulteney Boat Club is looking forward to a large influx of new rowers as the Year 6s transition into the Middle School.

School Premiership Regatta number 1
Pulteney competed at the 1st School Premiership Regatta on the AM Ramsay international regatta course on Saturday. The Boys Year 8A  Quad of Digby Modra, Moses Relf-Christopher (heat) / Eli Kennison (final), Xavier Lee, Vivaan Chandra; Cox Xavier Bucciarelli showed a great improvement between the heat and final to win the B division by 1 second.

The 7A girls who had previously shown great form at the Murray Bridge regatta worked hard to take home 1st place in the B division final.  The crew was stroked by Christiana Staniszewski (Year 9 by invitation), Edie Chapman, Ava Livesey, Celeste Williams: Cox James Bedson. The Year 7 girls are trying to recruit more girls for their crew and are one of the more highly favoured Year 7 crews this season.

The Year 8 boys were very competitive in their heats. They however were unable to recapture their earlier boat speed for the finals. The B crew of Oliver Nichols, Flynn Donaghy-Ward, Hugo Vallelonga, Harvey Patten: Cox – Jake Hutchinson improved greatly from the previous regatta to come 6th in the preliminary race and 7th in the final.

The A crew of Lachie Bedson, Leo Ying-Papps (heat) /Harvey Patten (final), Ashton Tan, Eli Kennison, Cox: Jacob McGinley took home a 3rd place in the heat and 5th place in the final. In a dramatic conclusion to their regatta campaign the stroke of the crew had to be assisted from the boat with exhaustion after completely emptying the tank.

The boys 1st Four of Charlie Williamson, Georgios Mavragelos, Sam Williams, Sam Stojsavljevic:  Cox – James Bedson finished 2nd in their heat with a large gap to 3rd place. Due to an injury the crew was changed for the finals and unfortunately experienced a jammed seat during the race. Without the use of the sliding seat, James Bedson heroically hung on for the final 1,500m to allow the crew to complete the race, only being overtaken by Pembroke in the latter stages after an epic tussle.

The 9A girls crew of Imogen Blachly, Elouise Clarke, Lois Darker, Christiana Staniszewski: Cox – Victoria Staniszewski worked hard to hold off a fast moving Scotch crew to take out 2nd place in the B division final. The tight margin showed that the 9A’s is a crew to watch in future regattas as they work their way to the top of school girl rowing.

The Pulteney crews were cheered on by a vocal crowd of parents and friends who enjoyed the shade of the rowing tents and the famous Pulteney egg and bacon rolls.

Thank you to all the coaches Bill, Xavier, Jacob and Mr Brown for their amazing support at the regatta.
