Service Learning: Making a Difference Beyond Ourselves
One of the defining characteristics of a Pulteney education is our commitment to service. It is embedded across the life of our School because we believe education should equip our young women and men not only with knowledge and skills, but with the character, compassion and confidence to use them in service of others.
Service learning is about much more than volunteering or raising funds for a worthy cause. At its best, it connects meaningful service with learning, reflection and personal growth. It encourages our students to look beyond themselves, to better understand the experiences of others and to recognise that each of us has a responsibility to contribute positively to the communities of which we are part.
Through these experiences, students develop empathy, compassion, humility and gratitude. Importantly, they also learn that leadership is not defined simply by a title or position of responsibility. Leadership is demonstrated through action, through the willingness to contribute, to advocate for others and to make a difference.
This week’s Pink Round across Pulteney sport is a wonderful example of service and advocacy in action. Across fixtures, students will wear pink socks, while pink ribbon line marking and artwork on our ovals will provide a visible expression of support and raise awareness of women’s health throughout our sporting community.
Beyond the colour and activity, Pink Round provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the important women in their lives and to recognise the role we can all play in supporting the health and wellbeing of others. It also reminds us that sport can be a powerful platform for raising awareness and creating positive social impact.
The presentation of the ‘Pink Award’ further reinforces the qualities we want our students to demonstrate: respect, sportsmanship, compassion and community-minded leadership. These are qualities that matter well beyond the sporting field.
While Pink Round provides a visible example this week, service occurs throughout the year and across the School. Pulteney students actively support organisations including Anglicare, the Mary Magdalene Centre, Hutt St Centre and Unite4Kids to name a few. These partnerships provide meaningful opportunities for our students to better understand challenges within their own community while making a tangible contribution to the lives of others.
Our commitment to service also extends beyond South Australia and Australia. We are particularly excited to see the return of the Nepal Service-Learning Program in 2026, building on previous successful experiences, most recently in 2024.
Importantly, our engagement in Nepal is founded upon genuine, long-term relationships rather than a one-off visit. Students engage with local communities and schools in a spirit of partnership and reciprocal learning, recognising that service is not simply about what we can give, but also what we can learn from others.
Experiences such as Nepal can be transformative. They develop global citizenship and cultural understanding, while challenging students to become more resilient, independent and adaptable. They provide perspective and foster gratitude, while encouraging students to consider their responsibilities within a world far broader than their immediate experience. Our hope is that these experiences also nurture something enduring, a lifelong commitment to serving others.
This is why service learning is such an important complement to academic learning at Pulteney. Education has its greatest impact when knowledge is connected with purpose. While we want our students to pursue excellence, embrace opportunity and achieve their ambitions, we also want them to consider how their talents, knowledge and experiences might benefit others.
Ultimately, a Pulteney education should encourage every student to ask not only, “What can I achieve?” but also, “How can I make a positive difference in the lives of others?”
That question sits at the heart of service learning and, more broadly, our commitment to educating the whole child. Through opportunities to serve locally, nationally and globally, we seek to develop young women and men of character, importantly, compassionate and capable individuals who understand their responsibility to others and are prepared to contribute meaningfully wherever life takes them.
