The Power of Peer Mentoring and Cross-Age Learning
One of the many strengths of life at Pulteney is the way our students learn not only from their teachers, but also from one another. Across the School, meaningful peer mentoring and cross-age tutoring opportunities play an important role in shaping confident, connected and compassionate young people.
Whether it is through musicals, Venture Club, service-learning initiatives, House competitions junior school reading and leadership programs or co-curricular activities, our students regularly work alongside peers from Junior to Middle and Senior years. These experiences provide far more than participation in an activity; they create authentic opportunities for older students to mentor, guide and encourage younger students as they develop new skills, build confidence and navigate unfamiliar challenges.
It is often in these moments, during rehearsals, training sessions, camps, competitions or collaborative projects that some of the most valuable learning occurs. Younger students gain reassurance and inspiration from the example set by senior students, while older students develop leadership, empathy, patience and communication skills as they support others. These relationships foster a strong sense of belonging and connection across year levels and contribute significantly to the warm and inclusive culture that defines Pulteney.
Importantly, peer mentoring also encourages students to approach new experiences with optimism and resilience. Younger students are more willing to step outside their comfort zones when supported by trusted older peers who have faced similar challenges themselves. Whether learning a new rowing technique, preparing for a performance, contributing to a House event or participating in a service-learning experience, students benefit enormously from the encouragement and practical advice provided by those who have gone before them.
More recently, our newly established after-hours academic tutoring program for Year 12 students, facilitated by recently graduated Old Scholars, has provided another excellent example of the value of cross-age peer support. Our new Old Scholars bring not only academic knowledge and study strategies, but also genuine insight into the experiences and pressures faced by our senior students. Their mentorship provides reassurance, motivation and practical guidance as Year 12 students pursue their goals with increasing confidence and clarity.
Research consistently highlights the benefits of peer mentoring and cross-age learning environments. Students involved in such programs often demonstrate improved academic outcomes, stronger interpersonal skills, increased self-confidence and enhanced emotional wellbeing. Equally important is the sense of community that emerges when students recognise they are part of a supportive network where everyone has a role to play in helping others succeed.
At Pulteney, we are proud to offer a learning environment where these relationships can flourish naturally and meaningfully. Our students are encouraged to lead with kindness, support one another generously and approach challenges with courage and optimism. Through these shared experiences, they learn that personal growth is not achieved alone, but through connection, encouragement and a willingness to contribute positively to the lives of others.
Opportunities for peer support and mentoring are among the many experiences that make a Pulteney education distinctive. They help shape young people who are confident in themselves, respectful of others and prepared to contribute thoughtfully and compassionately to the world around them.
As a final note, our Senior School musical, ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying’, is now fast approaching and the excitement is certainly building across the School community. The production has brought together students from a range of year levels in a wonderful example of collaboration, creativity and peer support in action. Tickets are selling fast and I encourage you to secure your seat if you are yet to do so. Tickets can be purchased via Humanitix HERE.
