The study of Outdoor Education provides students with opportunities to experience personal growth and to develop social skills, self-confidence, initiative, self-reliance, leadership, and collaborative skills.

The development of their relationship with natural environments has a positive impact on students’ health and wellbeing and create a lifelong connection with nature and a commitment to responsible activity in natural environments.

What will be in the course?

Through the study of three focus areas, students develop skills and understanding in preparation and planning for outdoor experiences, risk management, and conservation practices, and develop their teamwork and practical outdoor skills.

Students build their understanding of ecosystems and the impacts of human actions and decisions through the study of natural environments and wilderness areas. They develop knowledge and understanding of environmental systems and their conservation.

The purpose of the focus areas is to equip students with the essential skills, knowledge, and understanding required for safe and effective engagement with natural environments. This includes developing the ability to plan and prepare thoroughly, manage potential risks through informed strategies, and learn strong teamwork and decision-making skills vital for successful outdoor activities and journeys.

How will I be assessed?

The below details of the planned tasks shows where students have the opportunity to provide evidence for each of the specific features of the assessment design criteria.

School Assessment (100%)

Assessment Type 1:  About Natural Environments – weighting 50%

Task 1 (20 %)
(600 words/~4min – multi-modal)

Students prepare a minor presentation which identifies and promotes responsible and sustainable environmental practice in relation to a selected issue.

Task 2 (30 %)
(1000 words/~6min – multi-modal)

A Water Issue – finding out about our water issues

Investigation of environmental issues related to water – issues, causes and solutions for a sustainable future.

Assessment Type 2:  Experiences in Natural Environments – weighting 50%

Task 1 (20 %)
(600 words/4min – multi-modal)

Bush Exploration, learning to set up and climb safely, hike and navigate effectively and mountain bike technically.

Presentation outlining personal planning and learning that provides evidence and details of experiences, personal observations, skill development and achievement with reflection on these.

Multimodal options

Task 2 (30 %)
(1000 words/~6min – multi-modal)

Kayak/Bushwalk Exploration – beginning my journey to Self-reliance. What skills did I learn about myself, working with others and interacting with the natural environment.

Presentation outlining personal planning and skill development.

 

Students undertake:

·         4 activity days per semester

·         1 journey preparation day

·         1 three- or four-day outdoor journey in natural environments (depending on travel time)
