What will be in the course?

Students will engage with five distinct areas of study, these being Solo Performance, Ensemble Performance, Composing and Arranging, Musicianship, and Music Appreciation.

Students will develop their performance skills in both solo and ensemble capacities. In Solo Performance, students will participate in weekly masterclasses and perform 4 to 5 minutes of repertoire at the end of each term on their main instrument. All students will participate in Ensemble Performance as part of class band.

Students will develop their musicianship and aural skills at approximately Grade 2 to 3 AMEB level. They will engage with theoretical concepts including primary and secondary triads, traditional and modern chord notation, scales, intervals, transposition, and be able to recognise these aurally. Students will apply theoretical concepts learnt in creative composing and arranging exercises to further enhance their knowledge and use of concepts.

Students will learn to analyse simple and set forms including sonata, concerto, and symphonic forms, applying the six elements of music to critically reflect and discuss musical concepts and composition techniques.

The focus of the course will be to develop the ability to engage with and perform musical works with confidence, a high level of stylistic interpretation, and an understanding of the contextual background and theoretical concepts.
