What will be in the course?

In Year 10 German, students deepen their language skills and intercultural understanding through engaging themes such as Shopping, School, Holidays, Travel, and Nature & the Environment.

A highlight of the course is participation in the ‘Unternehmen Deutsch’ (Enterprise German) project. In this authentic learning experience, students collaborate with a German company operating in Australia to develop a new product, business, or service idea tailored for their partner company.

Students:

• Use spoken and written German across various settings, both in the classroom and through digital communication tools
• Respond to and create a wide variety of multimodal texts
• Learn how German functions as a system and experiment with increasingly complex sentence structures
• Reflect on cultural identity and differences between German-speaking countries and Australia

Enrichment Opportunities

• A three-week in-country language and culture tour to Germany is offered every second year to students in Years 10/11.
• Students may apply in Year 10 for the German Exchange Program (Bayrischer Jugendring), where they host a student from Germany and later spend approximately two months with their host family in Bavaria during Year 11.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of Year 10, students will be able to:

• Initiate and sustain spoken and written conversations in German
• Collaborate in decision-making, problem-solving, and negotiation
• Use both prepared and spontaneous language
• Extract and evaluate information, feelings and opinions from diverse texts
• Reflect on their own identity and values through their experiences with the German language and culture

Skills Developed

• Confident use of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
• Application of more complex grammatical structures and vocabulary
• Ongoing comparison of English and German language
• Preparation for the expectations and style of SACE Stage 1 German
