What will be in the course?

In Year 10 Chinese, students deepen their language skills and intercultural understanding through engaging themes such as Shopping, Activities, Clothing, Jobs, Appearance and Home.

Enrichment Opportunities

A two-week in-country language and culture tour to China is offered every second year to students in Years 10/11.

In this course, students will:

  • Engage in increasingly sustained spoken and written interactions in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
  • Express and justify ideas, thoughts and opinions on topics relevant to teenagers’ personal and social worlds.
  • Create a range of imaginative, persuasive and informative texts for varied purposes and audiences.
  • Translate and interpret texts between Chinese and English, considering cultural meaning and contextual differences.
  • Analyse Chinese language features, including sentence structures, grammar, and character components.
  • Explore how language reflects and influences culture, identity, and social relationships.
  • Reflect on their own language choices and the impact of Chinese language and culture on their identity.
  • Develop metalinguistic awareness by comparing Chinese and English language systems.

At the end of the Year 10 Chinese program, students should be able to:

  • Initiate, sustain, and extend interactions in Chinese to exchange and compare ideas, opinions, and experiences from their own and others’ lives.
  • Use spoken, written, and non-verbal language effectively to plan, collaborate, and reflect on events and experiences.
  • Analyse, evaluate, and synthesise information from a range of texts, identifying key ideas and perspectives.
  • Interpret and translate spoken and written texts with cultural sensitivity, adjusting expression to maintain intended meaning.
  • Create texts using appropriate linguistic and stylistic choices to suit diverse contexts, audiences, and purposes.
  • Enhance spoken and written communication through the use of cohesive devices, varied sentence structures, and expressive vocabulary.
  • Apply understanding of pronunciation, tone, and rhythm in speech to develop fluency.
  • Use knowledge of grammar, sentence construction, and text features to understand and produce meaningful language.
  • Apply metalanguage to analyse and discuss the structure and function of Chinese texts.
  • Reflect on their intercultural experiences, examining how learning Chinese shapes their world views and communication styles.
