What will be in the course?

This course is tailored for students who have exposure to Chinese language and culture, often using Chinese at home, and possess varying degrees of proficiency. It aims to enhance their linguistic skills and deepen their understanding of Chinese culture and identity. Students are assessed on their ability to communicate effectively in Chinese, both orally and in writing, and to demonstrate an understanding of cultural contexts. Assessments may include oral presentations and conversations, written assignments and essays, listening and reading comprehension tasks, translation and interpretation.

In this course, students will:

  • Engaging in sustained interactions, expressing ideas, and responding to others in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
  • Creating informative and imaginative texts for diverse purposes and audiences.
  • Translating and interpreting texts, considering cultural nuances and context.
  • Reflecting on personal experiences and cultural identity through language use.
  • Analysing the structure and features of Chinese language, including grammar and vocabulary.
  • Exploring the relationship between language and culture, and how they influence communication.
  • Examining the role of language in expressing identity and social relationships.

At the end of the Year 10 Chinese program, students should be able to:

  • Initiate and extend interactions in Chinese to exchange and compare ideas, opinions, and experiences about personal and others’ worlds.
  • Use non-verbal, spoken, and written language to collaborate, plan, and reflect on activities and events.
  • Evaluate and synthesise information and ideas from texts, demonstrating understanding of different perspectives.
  • Interpret, translate, and analyse information, responding in Chinese or English and adjusting language to convey meaning effectively.
  • Create texts by selecting and manipulating language to suit a range of contexts, purposes, and audiences.
  • Enhance cohesion in spoken and written texts through the strategic use of language devices and structures.
  • Understand and apply nuances of spoken Chinese to extend fluency.
  • Select and apply knowledge of language conventions, structures, and features to interact, make meaning, and create texts.
  • Use metalanguage to support discussions about the structures and features of texts.
  • Reflect on personal language use and cultural identity, discussing how learning Chinese influences ideas and communication styles.
