Standing alongside our friends in Nepal

This Sunday, 10 Pulteney students and three staff will depart for Nepal, continuing a service learning relationship that has connected our School with communities there for more than 15 years.

Since 2011, Pulteney students have travelled to Nepal to learn, serve and build meaningful relationships with schools and communities across Kathmandu and the Annapurna region. Over time, those experiences have become about much more than visiting another country. They are about connection, perspective and understanding what it means to contribute to a community beyond our own.

This year’s journey comes at a particularly poignant time.

Recent devastating flash flooding in northern Nepal, near the border with Tibet, has caused widespread damage, displacing families and destroying homes. While the regions our students will visit have not been affected and the Pulteney trip will proceed as planned, the news has prompted our travelling students to consider how they can use their own experience to make a difference.

As part of their advocacy, the group has launched a fundraising campaign to support relief and recovery efforts for communities affected by the floods.

Funds raised will go to the World Expeditions Foundation, which has worked in Nepal since 1975 and has trusted relationships with local organisations on the ground, helping ensure support is directed where it can have the greatest impact.

For our students, it is an opportunity to put the principles of service learning into action, not simply travelling to Nepal, but listening, learning and responding to the needs of a country and people with whom Pulteney has shared a longstanding connection.

As our students prepare to leave this Sunday, they do so knowing they are part of a Pulteney story that began long before their own journey and one they now have the opportunity to carry forward.
