Open A2 Div 2

Open A team came in this week against a tough opponent in Nazareth. While we could not fill a full line up, Zachary and Hannah stepped up from Middles and played quite well alongside Brian, Ashton, Roy and Tiffany. With only Roy recording the sole win in his singles match. A valiant effort by all team members.

Coach: Alice Cheung

Middle A2 Div 2

After a narrow lost in week 1, the Middle A team came out with very strong performance. Zachary again leading the way with a solid win at top singles. Along with team members Cameron, Caiden, Alex, Raynee and Lana who all showed great communication and team work were victorious in all their doubles match ups. Pulteney taking the rubber comfortably 8-1.

Coach: Alice Cheung

Middle B2 Div 2

Our Middle B team also came out victorious after a close lost in week 1. All team members played well and constantly showing signs of improvement. But it wasn’t without a fight as came down to the wire with Hannah winning the last singles to clinch Pulteney the 5-3 win.

Coach: Alice Cheung, Anh Pham and Robbin Wang

Basketball

It has been a fantastic start to Term 4 for our Girls Basketball program, with all three Middle School teams recording victories in their opening matches.

Our Middle C team started strongly with a 24–16 victory over Seymour. With only one Middle School student in the team last week due to the Choral Concert, we relied heavily on our enthusiastic Year 6 players stepping up to fill the remaining positions. It has been fantastic to see these younger students embrace the opportunity to play at a higher level, gaining valuable experience and confidence along the way.

Our Middle B team also produced a strong performance, securing a 24–11 win over Concordia, while our Middle A girls rounded out a successful week with an impressive 35–25 victory over Pembroke.

A particularly exciting milestone for the program is the return of a Middle A Girls Basketball team for the first time in nearly six years. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the continued growth of girls basketball at Pulteney.

Many of these girls have played a significant role in rebuilding the program, consistently showing commitment, enthusiasm and a willingness to challenge themselves by competing in older age groups. Their dedication over the past few years has helped create more opportunities for younger students and has laid a strong foundation for the future of girls basketball at Pulteney.

It is incredibly pleasing to see this hard work beginning to pay off, and we look forward to watching all our teams continue to develop throughout the term!

Pulteney 6/46 defeated by Walford 56

Our Senior B cricket team took on Walford on Friday, looking to build on their excellent win against Seymour the previous week and secure a second consecutive victory.

With several players unavailable due to Valedictory and All Schools Athletics, the girls faced a challenging task. Batting first, Pulteney worked hard to reach 46 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.

Despite a strong bowling performance, Walford was able to chase down the total, finishing on 56 runs. While the result didn’t go our way, the team showed great commitment and resilience under difficult circumstances.

Pulteney vs PAC – Morgan Oval

Pulteney fielded first at Morgan Oval and faced early pressure as PAC raced to 0/41 after four overs.

Excellent outfield catches from James and Harrison helped turn the momentum, followed by an impressive bowling spell from Zac, who was on a hat-trick at one stage. Harrison also delivered a disciplined four-over spell, while sharp fielding produced run-outs from Zac, Harrison and Josh. Pulteney looked well placed to restrict PAC to around 100, but some late hitting saw the hosts finish on 8/126 from their 20 overs.

Captain Josh led the chase with an excellent 47, supported by a valuable 20 from Year 8 student Oliver. With 15 runs needed from the final three overs, the match went down to the wire. Despite a determined effort, Pulteney finished just four runs short in an entertaining contest.

Cricket - 1st XI

Pulteney vs St Ignatius – Saturday Morning

Batting first at home in damp and challenging conditions, Pulteney established a solid platform with scores in the twenties from Josh, Jono and Connor at the top of the order.

A cluster of wickets saw the team slip to 7/70 before a valuable 20 from Zac helped lift the total to a competitive 107 from 20 overs.

Early wickets kept Pulteney firmly in the contest, but an unbeaten 37 from St Ignatius’ Kensington player, Martha, proved decisive. The visitors reached the target with eight wickets down and one over to spare.

While both matches ended in narrow defeats, the team showed encouraging progress from Week 1. There were valuable contributions with bat and ball, along with some excellent fielding, as the players continue to develop their ability to manage the key moments in close contests.

Pulteney 7/121 (20 overs) defeated by Trinity College 4/122 (14 overs)

Captain Ilan won the toss and elected to bat first, with openers Ollie and Jimmy making an excellent start. The pair built a strong foundation, combining well before Jimmy was dismissed for 15, ending a valuable 66-run partnership.

Ilan then joined Ollie at the crease and kept the scoreboard moving with energetic running and positive shot-making. Ollie went on to post his second half-century in as many matches this term, finishing on an outstanding 68 not out. After Ilan fell for 14, Pulteney unfortunately lost momentum, with the next five batters adding only nine runs between them. Despite some useful boundaries late in the innings, the Navy Blues finished at 7/121.

Pulteney’s bowling innings began well, with Hudson and Jimmy taking excellent catches and the team capitalising on early opportunities to remove three quality Trinity batters. However, Trinity’s batting depth proved decisive as they took advantage of some short-pitched bowling and were able to maintain a steady flow of runs and boundaries.

Despite a few chances going begging — including one caught by a Trinity substitute fielder — Trinity’s set batters continued to score freely, reaching the target in just 14 overs. Lincoln was the pick of the bowlers with 3/30, while Edward took Pulteney’s only other wicket.

While it was disappointing to record our first loss of the season, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. The team will look to bounce back strongly next week when they travel to take on PAC.

Cricket - Year 7/8 Boys'

Pulteney 5/140 (20 overs) defeated Saint Ignatius College 6/76 (20 overs)

Captains Max and Lewis won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision that paid off. Openers Max and Harvey got the team off to a strong start, scoring 37 and 26 respectively, before Lewis made a valuable 27 at number four. Their contributions helped Pulteney set a challenging total of 5/140.

Our bowling innings began perfectly, with Aaryan taking a wicket on just the second ball of the innings. James P was particularly difficult to get away, finishing with outstanding figures of 2 wickets for 2 runs from 3 overs. Further wickets from other bowlers, combined with the strength of our total, saw Saint Ignatius finish at 6/76 after 20 overs.

It was an excellent all-round team performance, and we hope to carry this fantastic form through the remainder of the term.

Tennis

Division 1 Girls'

The Division 1 girls continued their strong form with a spirited 4–3 victory over Seymour. With injuries reducing player availability for both teams, Pulteney showed determination across a series of competitive matches.

Both doubles matches were hard-fought. At No. 1, Lucy Hockley and Stella CC narrowly missed out in a marathon encounter, falling 7–5 in the tie-break. Mia Santrac and Georgie Vickers combined confidently to secure a convincing 6–2 doubles win.

The positive performances continued in the singles, with Elle Dodd and Georgia each recording strong 6–3 victories. Stella CC then clinched the overall result for Pulteney with an impressive 6–2 win at No. 1.

Congratulations to the team on another pleasing result, building on last week’s success!

Division 3 Girls'

The Division 3 girls recorded another convincing victory, winning 7–2 in a strong team performance. Across both singles and doubles, the players demonstrated patience, resilience and determination in some hard-fought contests.

Playing just her second match, Marie Barkoukis celebrated a doubles win and pushed her opponent in a close singles encounter. It has been wonderful to see her early progress and growing confidence. Claudia Vial also deserves special recognition for persevering through a lengthy, tightly contested tie-break to secure her singles victory.

Equally pleasing was the encouragement and support the players offered one another throughout the morning. Congratulations to everyone on another excellent team effort!

Match Report

The Middle As continued to build on last week’s efforts, producing a much more competitive set of matches against a strong St Peter’s side on their home courts.

Despite the challenging conditions and the threat of approaching storms, our students showed the effort, resilience and team spirit that are hallmarks of the Pulteney tennis program.

Congratulations to Hudson W, who secured the Middle As’ first win of the season with an excellent 6–3 victory at No. 2 singles.

There were many positive signs across the team, with players competing hard and taking games in several closely contested matches. The improvement from last week was clear, and the team will now focus on serving at training — looking to start points with greater consistency and confidence.

We wish our Year 7 players all the best at camp this week and look forward to seeing everyone at home next Saturday, when the team takes on traditional rivals Scotch at 10am.

Open A Tennis

Pulteney (9 sets, 54 games) defeated St Peter’s College (0 sets, 14 games)

Pulteney’s Open A2 tennis team continued its strong start to the season with an impressive nine-set victory over St Peter’s College Open A2 White.

The team began confidently in the doubles, playing an attacking style of tennis with strong movement towards the net. Harry Hockley (Year 12) and Niki Karasoulos (Year 9) led the way with a convincing 6–1 win, while Sofia Haddock and Ava Moukachar won 6–2, and Tilly Boucher and Sam Firth secured a 6–3 victory. As the clouds cleared, Pulteney headed into the singles with a 3–0 lead.

The singles featured strong baseline play across all six matches. Sofia (Year 7) delivered an outstanding 6–0 win, while Ava (Year 9) and Tilly (Year 12) proved too consistent for their opponents, both winning 6–1. Harry and Niki matched their doubles result with individual 6–1 victories, while Sam (Year 10) worked patiently through a determined defensive effort from his opponent to win 6–4.

The two contested doubles matches were closely fought. Ben V and Inesh C secured a hard-earned 7–6 victory, while Tommy J and Francesca C competed strongly in a 4–6 loss.

Tommy J helped inspire the team with an impressive 6–2 win, while Ben V and Sebastian D each recorded commanding 6–0 victories. Inesh C added a valuable 6–3 win, and Francesca C battled hard in a 3–6 loss.

Volleyball - Boys'

Boys Volleyball

It was a slightly different week for our Boys Volleyball program, with only four teams taking to the court due to a number of players being unavailable because of Valedictory celebrations.

With reduced numbers across the program, several students stepped up to play multiple matches, including some of our Middle School players who took on the challenge of competing in Senior School games. It was fantastic to see their willingness to help out and test themselves against older and more experienced opposition.

All four teams faced strong Blackfriars opposition, and despite the results, there were plenty of positives to take away from the matches.

Our Senior A and Senior B teams were both involved in closely contested matches, narrowly going down 2–1. Both teams showed plenty of fight and produced some excellent volleyball against quality opposition.

Our Middle A team also pushed their opponents in a competitive 2–1 loss, while our Middle B team went down 3–0. Despite the losses, both teams showed encouraging signs and continued to develop their skills and confidence on court.

Overall, it was a strong showing from all four teams against a very competitive Blackfriars program. A big thank you to the students who stepped up to play additional matches, particularly our Middle School players who took on the challenge of playing at Senior level.

It was fantastic to see the flexibility, enthusiasm and willingness to compete across the program, and we look forward to having more of our teams back on court next week!

Volleyball - Girls'

Girls Volleyball

It was another great weekend of volleyball, with all four of our Girls Volleyball teams in action and plenty of encouraging performances across the program.

Our Middle A team continued their strong start to the season with a dominant 3–0 victory. The girls applied excellent serving pressure throughout the match and were particularly impressive in their ability to finish points when the ball was returned over the net. It was pleasing to see the team stick to their structure and continue developing a more attacking mindset, showing some fantastic growth in their overall gameplay.

Our Middle B team went down 3–0, but there were plenty of positives to take away from the match. The girls showed great serving pressure and created numerous opportunities to use all three touches, highlighting their continued improvement in ball control and team play.

Our Middle C team also faced a tough challenge, going down 3–0. With four players completely new to the sport, it has been fantastic to see their enthusiasm and willingness to learn. There were plenty of positive signs throughout the match, and this group will only continue to improve as they gain more experience on court.

Our Senior B team was involved in a closely contested match, narrowly going down 2–1. It was a back-and-forth contest with some excellent volleyball played by both sides. The girls competed strongly throughout and can take plenty of confidence from their performance.

Overall, it was another encouraging round for our Girls Volleyball program. It has been fantastic to see the continued development across all teams, with plenty of positive signs as we progress further into the term!
