Year 7/8 Girls SWC recap
On Tuesday 12 May, the Pulteney girls’ basketball program was represented in the Year 7/8 Statewide Schools Cup. Across the two games, the team displayed resilience, teamwork, and plenty of determination against strong opposition.
The girls opened the day against a strong St Aloysius outfit, featuring several players competing in high division club basketball. Pulteney battled hard throughout the first half and matched the intensity early, but the offensive pressure from St Aloysius proved difficult to contain in the second half, with Pulteney going down 41–17. Antonia L led the scoring with 8 points in a determined performance.
The second game against Woodcroft saw a much stronger start from the girls, who came out with excellent energy and execution to take a commanding 23–12 lead at quarter time. Woodcroft responded with a barrage of three-pointers to close the margin, but Pulteney remained composed and in control to secure an impressive 41–31 victory. Antonia L was outstanding with 21 points, while Caterina L added 8 points in a strong team performance.
Although the girls did not progress to the next round, the day showcased the significant improvement this group has made over the past 12 months. Their development, teamwork, and competitiveness were clear to see, and there are certainly exciting things ahead for girls basketball at Pulteney Grammar School.

Netball
The clouds parted for another great round of netball on Saturday morning; it was wonderful to see so many smiling students and parents! A big thank you to the players who backed up and played two matches; your effort made a real difference, and your teammates appreciated the extra help.

Football
Boys Seniors
Pulteney Grammar 92 def Westminster 10
PGS delivered a dominant performance from start to finish against Westminster, with goal-scoring spread evenly across the team in a strong collective effort. The selflessness around goals and opportunity to bring other team mates into the game was a particularly highlight for the match. As the game progressed and we gained ascendancy and the team began to execute a kick-mark style more effectively, reflecting growing confidence and control.
It was pleasing to see younger and less experienced players step into key midfield roles and show emerging talent. Up forward, Elliot Gask was lively throughout kicking multiple goals and creating opportunities for teammates. Eli Morrow provided a strong aerial target up forward taking several contested marks, while Josh Allen used his ruck craft intelligently, positioning himself behind the ball to take strong intercept marks and give our midfielders first use of the footy.

Boys Middle
St John’s Grammar 9.6. 60 def Pulteney Grammar 4.2. 26
The boys started with intensity in the first game of the season. They won most centre clearances in the first and second quarter giving our forwards great service. The backline was working well together, holding strong under early pressure, and repelling most balls entering our defensive 50m. Quick ball movement by both hand and foot helped our forwards find space, resulting in a one goal lead by the main break. It was a complete team effort.
Following halftime, the opposition lifted their intensity, and unfortunately, we ran out of legs. A combination of fatigue and a smaller bench meant the ball started moving against us quickly. Despite this, the boys showed great character and did not give up. St John’s were quick to take advantage of our turnovers and dominated the possession in the final quarter to take the win.
We are very proud of how the boys have started the season—that first half showed what we are capable of. We played fantastic footy. The second half is a learning curve, and our commitment never wavered. We will come back stronger next week. Well done boys!

Senior Girls
Pulteney 12.17 (89) def Seymour 1.1 (7)
After missing out on our first game last week the girls were really keen to start the season strongly. Unfortunately the weather conditions were less than ideal however, that’s what comes with playing a winter sport.
Our starting midfield of Matilda E, Grace C, Anika T and Tilly B dominated the first quarter getting all five centre clearances which put our opponents under pressure straight away. We managed to kick 4 goals for the quarter despite the persistent rainfall.
In the second quarter we kept on attacking and although our opponents only entered 4 times for the half they were met with strong resistance from our backs each time only managing the one begging for the half whilst we managed to put on another 4 goals ourselves with Celeste W kicking 3 goals for the game.
After half time we were able to try some new positions for some girls and see what else we might be able to offer in future games. On the back of some strong leads and explosive moves in tight Lucy J was also able to hit the score board.
In the last quarter, we were again able to out score Seymour 2 goals to 1, had it not been for some inaccurate kicking we would have made the margin even greater but it was really pleasing you see Tabitha D kick her first goal in her first ever game late in the last quarter.
Well done to all our First XVI debutants playing their first game. First of many Anika Tran (#137), Sofia Haddock (#135), Tabitha D (#133), Zara E (#134), Holly P (#136), Sofia Z (#138), Maggie C (#132) & Emily C (#131)

Soccer
Girls
A beautiful, warm afternoon under blue skies with some cloud cover was the perfect way to begin the Girls soccer season against against Pembroke.
Pulteney started the first half strongly, dominating possession and creating several shots on goal, but were unable to convert our chances. The second half was more even, but we took our opportunity to score the winning goal.
The team’s attitude and work ethic were outstanding in a well-deserved 1-0 win.
Go Pulteney!

Pizzey Cup Tennis
Well done to Sophia Haddock and Ava Moukachar who competed in Pizzey Cup last week. Sofia and Ava played doubles together (against QLD) and narrowly went down in a tie break.
It was a fantastic experience for both students. While the tennis was challenging at times and the SA team finished fifth, it was a valuable opportunity to compete against strong opponents on grass courts. Sofia also had an impressive result, winning four of her six singles matches.

Rungie Cup
Rungie Cup – Indoor Rowing
Wyatt Hall was a hive of activity as students took part in the Indoor Rowing competition as part of the Rungie Cup. This annual event is a highlight of the school sporting calendar, bringing together students from across the houses to compete on the rowing machines.
A total of 32 students participated, showing great determination and house spirit as they pushed themselves to contribute valuable metres to their team totals. Indoor rowing provides an excellent test of fitness, strength, and resilience, and it was fantastic to see the level of effort and encouragement on display throughout the event.
After a closely contested competition, Bleby-Howard (BH) emerged as the winning house with a total of 4073 metres, narrowly ahead of Cawthorn-Nicholls (CN) on 4035 metres. Kennion-Miller (KM) finished third with 4010 metres, followed by Moore-Sunter (MS) on 3890 metres.
There were a number of outstanding individual performances across all houses. Notably, Eli Kennison (CN) recorded the highest distance of the day with an impressive 619 metres, setting the benchmark for the competition. Strong performances were also delivered by Lachlan Bedson (BH) and Jordan Bollinger (KM), who both recorded 583 metres.
Among the female competitors, there were some excellent results, with Celeste Williams (CN) leading the way with 523 metres, closely followed by Freya Hall (MS) with 512 metres. Other strong performances included Ava Livesy (MS) on 510 metres, Abby Johnson (KM) on 485 metres and Zoe Rose (BH) with 469 metres.
Across the field, there were several other excellent efforts, including Freddie Moore (CN) with 569 metres, Ashton Tan (KM) on 548 metres, and Will Hall (BH) with 544 metres, highlighting the depth of talent and competitive spirit across all houses.
It was great to see such strong participation and support, with students encouraging one another and fully embracing the competitive nature of the event.
Thank you to Mr Lukass Blicavs for arranging this year’s event, and to Mr John Taylor and Mr Jonty Millar for tabulating the scores. A big thank you also to the Heads of House for their ongoing support of the event.
Congratulations to Bleby-Howard on taking out this year’s Rungie Cup Rowing!
