Pulteney 50 defeated St Paul’s 49
Pulteney claimed a thrilling one-point victory over St Paul’s, winning 50–49 in a hard-fought contest. This was the third close game in a row for the team, so it was great to see the students get reward for their efforts.
The team began the game in an undisciplined manner, conceding several unnecessary free kicks that proved costly on the scoreboard. St Paul’s took advantage of these opportunities to kick six goals to two in the opening quarter, leaving Pulteney with plenty of work to do after the first break.
To the students’ credit, they responded strongly to the challenge at quarter time and did not look back. The contest work and defensive pressure lifted significantly, sparked by the efforts of Will McClurg. Pulteney began to win more ball from the centre bounce, which helped shift momentum and create greater opportunities in the forward half. The midfield group also worked much harder defensively, helping the team apply sustained pressure and have repeat forward 50 entries
Zac Holman provided a strong focal point up forward, but it was his defensive effort that stood out most. In one particularly impressive passage of play, he chased down his opponent deep in the back third before linking up in attack as the team moved the ball forward. Henry Tran also stood up in an important moment late in the final quarter, using his body well against his opponent before taking an excellent contested mark to thwart St Paul’s attack.
With the game in the balance during the closing stages, Harrison Rees put his body on the line in a crucial contest and then kicked the winning post from congestion in difficult conditions. It was a deserved result after an excellent response from quarter time onwards, and a strong example of the team’s ability to fight back under pressure.

Boys Middles
Pulteney 9.5.59 defeated Cabra 5.3.33
Our side produced a tough and determined performance to record what was arguably our best win of the season in challenging wet conditions. We started strongly, taking control in the opening quarter through intense pressure, clean ball movement and a willingness to win the hard contests. However, credit to Cabra, who fought their way back into the game and reduced the margin to just a goal by half-time.
The second half was a real test of character, and the players responded superbly. We consistently won the ground-ball battle, laid strong tackles and applied relentless pressure around the contest. Our quick hands and willingness to give the ball to teammates in better positions proved a major factor, helping us create opportunities and maintain momentum. The midfield group worked tirelessly when turnovers occurred, pushing hard both ways to support our back men and limit the Cabra’s scoring chances. Our defensive running and commitment to team football were outstanding throughout the second half.
As the game wore on, our pressure continued to increase, forcing mistakes and allowing us to gain control. The team’s discipline, work rate and commitment to playing for each other were evident across the ground. In difficult conditions, it was a hard-fought and well-deserved victory, showcasing the group’s resilience and ability to respond when challenged. This was a terrific team performance and our most impressive win of the season.
Soccer
Boys Soccer – Middle B
The Middle School B team travelled to Scotch over the weekend and delivered a spirited and competitive performance. The team started strongly, applying consistent pressure in the first half and creating a number of promising attacking opportunities. Their efforts were unlucky not to be rewarded on the scoreboard, striking the post twice and narrowly missing several chances that could have shifted the momentum in their favour.
Despite their positive start, Scotch were able to regroup after halftime and made the most of their opportunities in the second half. Their efficiency in front of goal ultimately proved decisive, as they converted their chances to secure a 3–1 result.
While the final score did not reflect the effort and intent shown throughout the match, the game was played in great spirit and provided valuable experience for the group. The team can take confidence from their ability to create scoring opportunities and compete strongly against quality opposition, setting a solid foundation for continued improvement in the weeks ahead.
Girls Soccer
The match was a hard-fought contest against a determined Westminster. Pulteney enjoyed plenty of possession but were unable to finish clinically, which kept our opponents in the game. In the end, a 1-1 draw was a fair reflection of two evenly matched teams.
Our girls gave everything they had and were completely exhausted by the final whistle. We’ll return after the holidays looking to build on a strong first half of the season. Thank you to the families who came out to support the team, we truly value your encouragement.
Enjoy the holidays and hopefully catch a few World Cup games. Go Pulteney!

Volleyball
It was another competitive round of volleyball, with our teams taking on strong opposition across multiple divisions.
The U19B1 side faced Norwood in a highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash. After claiming the opening set, the boys were unable to maintain momentum, eventually falling in three sets. The U19B2 team started slowly but showed great resilience, finding their rhythm late and winning the final set. Despite the strong finish, they were unable to overturn the early deficit.
The U17B1 team delivered one of the standout performances of the round, dominating from start to finish in a convincing 3-0 victory. Their control throughout the match was reflected in an impressive overall score of 75-32. The U15B1 team battled hard against a strong Norwood outfit but went down 2-1 in a closely contested match.
On the girls’ side, the U19G1 team played some excellent volleyball but were unlucky to fall short in a controversial countback decision. The U17G1 squad also suffered a countback loss, however their energy and enthusiasm remained high despite the late 9pm start. The U15G1 team produced a terrific performance against Adelaide High, securing a 3-1 victory through dominant serving, strong passing, and excellent teamwork.
Congratulations to all players and coaches on their efforts throughout the round.
The last game of the term is this Friday before a much needed break over the holiday period.

Basketball
The final round of the term saw our Boys’ basketball teams take on Immanuel, with the Seniors at home and the Middle School teams travelling away.
The Senior Cs featured several fresh faces and, despite showing plenty of effort, were unable to find their rhythm against a strong Immanuel side. The Senior Bs displayed great resilience, overcoming an early deficit to claim a hard-fought 51-44 victory. The Senior As continued their strong form, producing a dominant performance to secure a convincing 74-50 win.
The Middle School teams enjoyed a successful afternoon away from home. The Middle Cs set the tone with an impressive 46-18 victory, while the Middle Bs followed with a thrilling 43-41 win. The game was decided in dramatic fashion, with Seb L knocking down the match-winning basket with just five seconds remaining. The Middle As also found themselves in a tight contest, holding their composure late to secure a 43-41 victory.
The Middle Ds travelled to face Nazareth and delivered one of the performances of the round, recording a commanding 45-8 win through relentless defence and excellent teamwork.
As we reach the end of the term, several teams are well positioned heading into the second half of the season. The Middle Bs and Cs sit atop their respective ladders, while the Middle As remain firmly in the middle of a competitive competition. The Senior Cs currently occupy fourth position, with the Senior Bs sitting second. Following their impressive win this weekend, the Senior As remain in grand final contention, sitting equal second on the ladder.
Congratulations to all players and coaches on a successful term. We look forward to building on these performances after the break.
