Girls Basketball

After a hard-fought term, we finished the season on a high with two wins for our Wednesday night teams. The girls battled hard all term, so finishing with victories was a great reward for their efforts.

For our Senior B side, we fielded a team largely made up of Year 8 students, supported by some excellent leaders from Years 10, 11 and 12. The group showed significant improvement throughout the term and have set themselves up well for the year ahead as new opportunities arise.

In the Middle B team, we were missing our Year 8 students who had been playing up all term. Despite this, the group stepped up each week and remained competitive, which is a fantastic achievement. Finishing the term with a win was a real confidence boost for everyone involved.

Girls Volleyball

The final game for our Senior A and Middle B teams unfortunately resulted in losses for both sides. However, particularly in the case of the Middle Bs, the energy and enthusiasm were on full display.

A decision to bring pom poms along for added support certainly lifted the atmosphere, creating plenty of excitement, noise, and perhaps a little distraction. While it didn’t quite translate into a win, the spirit and support shown by the group was fantastic.

The girls have improved significantly throughout the term, showing that the program is in very good hands moving forward. The Senior Bs and Middle As will play their final games this weekend and will be looking to finish the term with one last win.

Boys Volleyball

Boys’ volleyball continues to thrive, with all senior teams claiming wins this week. The middle school teams are still developing and, while they did not record victories, they continue to show clear improvement each week.

Supported by some Year 6 students in the Middle B team, the group is getting better and better with each match and training session.

This week, some of our teams will play at home against Nazareth, while the remaining teams will travel away to face St Ignatius.

 Cricket – Boys 1st XI

PGS 7/157 (Connor Martin 44, Josh Allen 39) Defeated St. Peters 7/90 (Harrison Rees 2/5, Will McClurg 2/6)

A strong performance for the first win of the year! Josh Allen got us off to a fast start, before Connor Martin anchored the innings for a fine 44. Some good running and timely boundaries powered us to 157.

Will McClurg’s crafty off spin with the new ball put the result beyond doubt early, and Harrison Rees cleaned up the tail, each taking two for. Line and length was the order of the day, with patient bowling inducing regular mistakes. Great form-finding morning two weeks out from Intercol!

 Cricket – Boys 2nd XI

PGS 2nd XI  81 (Sam Champion 23, Michael Owen 11) lost to St Peters 3rd XI  4/125 (Kingston Gillespie 2/16)

A moderate batting performance was book-ended by a very impressive innings from opener Sam Champion and some good strokes from number 10 Michael Owen. After a promising start, having the opposition 2/12 after 4 overs, we were eventually overwhelmed by a talented batting team. Special mention to debutant Kingston Gillespie who, after not playing cricket for six years, hit a massive six and took two early wickets. Captain Patrick Perry took an outstanding catch and led his team well.

 Middle 8/9 Cricket

We played Saint Michael’s at home and got sent in to bat on a slippery wicket. Our openers Lincoln and Jimmy got us off to a flying start, before Saint Michael’s got themselves back in the game with some handy wickets. After 10 overs we had fallen to 4/35, but some strong batting from Edward and Ilan steadied the ship for us, before some late cameos from Hudson and Xavier brought us to a respectable total of 87.

We started our bowling effort in superb fashion, with Seb and Xavier taking three wickets between them in the first 4 overs, before Ollie and Edward continued to challenge the Saint Michael’s batters with some brilliant line and length bowling. Our fielding kept us in the game, as Saint Michael’s continued to score whilst losing wickets. As the scores drew level, some brilliant bowling from Jimmy caught the top edge of their last batsmen, who chipped it straight up to Ollie, finishing the game as a tie.

The boys are starting to look dangerous as they near the end of their season, so we look forward to next week.

Badminton

Senior B4 (7/15/406) defeated St Peter’s College (2/5/282)
The Senior badminton team delivered a strong performance in Round 5 against St Peters, securing a convincing 7-2 victory. The team performed confidently across both singles and doubles matches. Oliver M, Jamie, Marcus are Oliver T all produce good singles victories while Brian just went down in a close contested match in 3 sets. But bounced back strongly securing the doubles with Oliver T in straight sets. Our other pair of Bosco and Jamie also took out their doubles in straight sets. Overall another great team effort.

Middle B4 Blue (4/10/337) defeated by Pembroke (5/10/325)
The Middle Blue badminton team had a closely contested match, narrowly going down 4-5. Cameron and Caiden led strongly with convincing singles victories and also combined well to win their doubles match. Justin Zhou also secured an important singles win for the team. Despite the narrow result, the team showed determination and competitive spirit throughout the round.

Middle B4 White (7/14/413) defeated Unley High School (2/7/338)
The Middle White badminton team delivered a strong performance against Unley, securing a convincing 7-2 victory. Solid singles wins from Zachary, Fred, Dan, Yuna and William helped the team establish a clear lead early in the round. In doubles, Zachary & Fred and Yuna & Bella also contributed important wins to strengthen the result. Overall, it was a confident team performance with consistent play across both singles and doubles matches.

Team Result Score
Open A Loss 4/34 – 5/38
Open B Loss 4/29 – 5/39
Middle A Loss 0/3 – 9/54
Middle B Loss  2/31 – 7/50

Our Open and Middle Boys PGS tennis teams had their first matches on the freshly resurfaced South Parklands Hockey Complex this weekend, playing PAC in perfect conditions.

Open A players put on some fantastic tennis in a very close match, including exceptional displays from the dynamic duo Sofia Haddock (Yr 7) and Ava Moukachar (Yr 9) in both doubles and singles, and from Harry Hockley (Yr 12) in singles, however were narrowly defeated by their opponents, missing out by one set.

Starting the match at a multi-set deficit due to player illnesses, efforts from Open B players Michael Ciriac (Yr 10) (recently back from injury), Ben Vasilunas (Yr 10) and Seb Dunlop (Yr 11) helped fight back to a similar scoreline to that of the Open A’s. Steven Liang (Yr 10) and Kingston Gillespie (Yr 11) also made their PGS tennis debuts, filling in for missing players, with Steven winning his first doubles ( and first ever) set of tennis – classy stuff!

Middle A suffered a tough defeat, but should all be proud of the persistence and never-say-die attitude displayed by their team, a mentality exemplified by Hudson Wilkes (Yr 8), Cooper Argue (Yr 8) and Wesley Hubrechsen-Yung (Yr 7).

Middle B players have showed great improvement throughout the term, with focusses from their weekly trainings present in their matchplay, a fact particularly evident in the development of a blistering backhand of a keen Sebby Gasiorowski (Yr 7), who fought back from a 1-4 deficit to win (7-5) in tie-break.

Team Result Score
Div 1 Girls Win 5/48 – 4/32
Div 2 Girls Win 5/36 – 4/33

No commiserations for our Girls’ Div 1 and 2 players who continued their three- and two-match streak this week with hard fought wins from both sides against Pembroke. Div 1 players Lucy Leyden (Yr 7), Lucy Hockley (Yr 9) and Mia Santrac (Yr 10) put on a clinic, with similar commendations earned by Claudia Vial (Yr 9), Lucy Jones (Yr 9) and Isla Cross (Yr 8) from Div 2. Great work girls!

Pulteney Rowing – Head of the River 2026

The 2026 SA Schools’ Head of the River Regatta at West Lakes marked the culmination of a season of strong growth and commitment for Pulteney Rowing. With 65 athletes competing across 13 crews from Years 7–12, the program fielded its largest number of crews in five years, reflecting the positive momentum building within the squad.

A Season of Growth

The 2025/26 season has been one of significant development for the Pulteney rowing program. Over the past twelve months participation has continued to grow, highlighted by more than 40 Year 6 students taking to the water in Term 4 in 10 Quad Sculls, beginning their rowing journey and strengthening the pathway into the senior program.

This progression was evident at the Head of the River where 13 crews represented Pulteney, ranging from Year 7/8 development crews through to both the Boys and Girls First Fours.

Head of the River Highlights

Across the regatta, Pulteney crews produced a series of determined performances in highly competitive fields. For many of our younger rowers it was an opportunity to gain valuable experience on the state’s biggest school rowing stage, while our senior crews proudly represented the school in the prestigious First Four events.

Several crews achieved excellent results. The Schoolgirl Year 7/8 A Coxed Quad (Hannah Lyttle, Hannah Kieu, Anastasia Kapaniris, Freya Hall, cox Victoria Staniszewski) won the B Final, while the Schoolboy Year 7/8 B Coxed Quad (Lucas Sheya, Sam Su, Tom Karagiannis, Peter Vivlios, cox Harper Tolfts) also secured first place in the B Final.

The Schoolboy Year 9/10 A Coxed Quad (Moses Relf-Christopher, Vivaan Chandra, Alexander Smith, Xavier Lee, cox Maggie Cannon) added another B Final victory, highlighting the strong development within the middle years of the program.

Other crews also performed strongly throughout the day. The Schoolboy Year 8/9 A Coxed Quad finished 4th in the A Final, while both senior crews competed with determination in the headline races, with the Schoolboy First Four finishing 6th and the Schoolgirl First Four finishing 7th in highly competitive finals.

Building the Team

In the lead-up to the regatta, more than 80 rowers and coaches gathered at the historic Pulteney Torrens Boathouse for the traditional Crew Pasta Night, a much-loved club tradition that brings the entire squad together before the major event.

A program of this scale relies on the support of many people, and we are extremely grateful to the Pulteney Boat Club Committee, led by President Matt Williamson, and committee members Briali and Tim Bedson, Tim and Meghann Cannon, Mel Smith and Ying Ying, whose tireless work continues to strengthen the rowing community.

We also extend our sincere thanks to John and Toni Kennison, who, while not officially on the committee, contributed generously on a weekly basis throughout the season.

We also extend our thanks to Principal Greg Atterton for his ongoing support of the rowing program, and to Deputy Principal Deb Dalwood, who did so much for the program while serving as Interim Principal. Our appreciation also goes to Zac Savage, Head of Senior School, and Lauren Connolly, Head of Middle School, for their encouragement of the rowers throughout the season.

Student Leadership

Special recognition goes to Rowing Captains Charlie Williamson and Christiana Staniszewski, whose leadership throughout the season provided a valuable connection between the coaching staff and the rowing squad. Their encouragement and support for younger rowers played an important role in building the positive culture within the program.

A Strong Community

The Pulteney Drum Corps once again brought energy and excitement to race day, creating a fantastic atmosphere along the banks at West Lakes.

The wider Pulteney rowing community also contributed enormously, including the Jarmer family for their generous support of the Crew Pasta Night and the Mavragelos family for their support of the Head of the River Dinner at the Adelaide Pavilion, which provided a wonderful opportunity for the rowing community to come together and celebrate the season.

We also acknowledge the generous support of our program partners, the Bedson family (Green Steel Supply and Form Boss), whose contributions helped secure a new boat for the program this season and continue to support the development of the club’s fleet. The purchase of a new racing shell, with another boat soon to be added, has greatly strengthened the program for future seasons.

Coaching and Support

The development of the rowing squad is driven by a committed coaching team. Special thanks go to Mr Matt Brown (Teacher in Charge)Gill Harfield (Junior Girls Coordinator) and Bill Darker (Junior Boys Coordinator) for their leadership.

Our appreciation also extends to the full coaching group who worked tirelessly with crews throughout the season:
Xavier Bucciarelli, Harry Wise, James Bedson, Sam Williams, Lucy Seppelt, Hana Melzer, Jacob McGinley, Chris Herschell, Brooklyn Selway and Rhiannon Sandow.

Finally, we thank the many parents, volunteers and supporters who assisted throughout the year at regattas, training sessions and club events. Their dedication continues to build a strong and supportive rowing community at Pulteney.

With a growing junior program, increasing participation and continued investment in boats and facilities, the future of the Navy Blue fleet looks very promising.

Go the Navy Blues.
