Cross Country Season Update by Shane Danaher

As we reach the halfway point of the Cross-Country season, the team has been working hard throughout Term 2 with some fantastic progress already on show.

We kicked off in Week 1 with our School Cross Country event over a friendly 2km course, and from Week 2 onward, our team has been competing weekly in the Wednesday night school meets.

It’s been wonderful to welcome so many new faces to the team. The first official race at St Peter’s College brought some nerves and uncertainty, but it was a great learning experience—our main focus early on was simply to build confidence and grow from there.

In a short space of time, the team has made incredible progress. They’ve quickly settled into the weekly race routine and have embraced the challenge of a new course each week. Their ability to adapt to change—both mentally and physically—has been a standout.

Primary Team Highlights:

  • Will D (Y6) has shown strong and consistent performances, improving from a 4:20/km pace to 4:06/km on a tougher course just last week.
  • Millie V (Y5) has been leading the girls, consistently hitting fast splits. At the SAPSASA State Championships, she clocked an impressive 4:14/km pace over 3km to secure 2nd place.
  • James H (Y3) has shaved his pace from 6:00/km down to under 5:00/km—an incredible leap!
  • Beau B (Y4) has also improved significantly, dropping from over 6:00/km to 5:20/km. His keen interest in timing and determination to finish strong has been inspiring.
  • Ethan C (Y3), new to the team, started at approximately 10:00/km at St Peter’s but has already improved to 6:00/km with increased confidence and training.

Training Update:

The team’s progress is evident not only in race results but also in training. They’ve been handling higher mileage and more intense sessions with growing ease and enthusiasm.

At Friday’s session, we focused on cornering technique and a 150m sprint finish. The athletes covered distances ranging from 2.4km to 3.4km, and the energy and effort on display impressed all the coaches.

We’ll continue to build on this momentum with targeted training focusing on technique, race strategy, and the strength needed to maintain good form.

What’s Next:

  • Thursday: Oakbank Champs—best of luck to Millie V and the selected Middle/Senior team members. Early forecasts predict wet conditions—perfect for cross country!
  • Following the long weekend: Wednesday meets resume with Loreto and then Woodcroft hosting.
  • Training will continue with regular time trials and focused sessions to keep driving improvement through the rest of Term 2.
