Futures, Term 2 Week 9 2025
Year 9 Job Seeking Skills
Throughout Term 2, our Year 9 students have been developing essential job seeking skills as part of their Futures curriculum. They have worked on crafting professional cover letters and resumes, and participated in a simulated group interview held last Thursday. This experience gave students the opportunity to build their confidence and apply their learning in a practical setting.
We are proud of all students for their thoughtful engagement and impressive performances. Special congratulations go to Angus Barklay, Lily Mackereth, Xavier Lee, Tom Zhang, Lia Cacas, Luke Forozandeh, Amelia Winslow, Frances Peng, Scarlett McCall, Ellouise Dodd, Sophie Perkins, and Poppy Rankine, who were successful in securing the ‘retail assistant’ role through their strong contributions during the group interview process. Well done to all involved!
Year 11 Work Experience
This week, our Year 11 students have stepped beyond the classroom and into a variety of workplaces across South Australia, taking part in our annual Work Experience Program. From law firms to veterinary clinics, construction sites to creative studios, students are exploring industries that align with their future career interests and aspirations.
Work experience offers a valuable opportunity for students to gain first-hand insight into the world of work—developing their understanding of daily routines, workplace expectations, and the skills required in different fields. It also helps them clarify their career goals and make informed decisions about future study and employment pathways.
We are proud of our students’ willingness to embrace new challenges and are confident they will represent our school with maturity, curiosity and enthusiasm. We look forward to hearing their reflections and celebrating the growth and learning they gain from this important experience.
Useful websites for career exploration – a holiday activity
With Term 3 having a major focus on subject selections for Year 9 to Year 11 students, the upcoming school holidays provide an excellent opportunity for students to take some time to explore their future options. This is especially important for our Year 12 students, as they get closer to the time when they have to make final decisions about their immediate post-schooling options. The Pulteney Futures website contains a large amount of information related to careers and university or TAFE related courses (and there is so much more)! Students can undertake a range of activities in the secure student area of the website to assist in their career exploration, including a career profiling quiz and support for resume and cover letter preparation. The ‘post school options’ tab is also a great source of information and has links to many SA and interstate university websites, with virtual tours and online brochures available.
For students wishing to explore apprenticeships or traineeships, the Australian Apprenticeship Pathways website has a wealth of information to assist students to look at industries, qualifications and support. If students are wanting to see and hear about different apprenticeships, the AA Pathways YouTube site has a wealth of information, where students can watch interviews with current apprentices and employers in a range of different areas.
Skills road website is an excellent site for students wanting to explore a trade/apprenticeship or traineeship career area. There is a lot of good information about a range of skills-based/certificate course careers. There is also an opportunity to do a Career Quiz and/or a Job Fit test, which will suggest career areas for students to explore.
My Future website has many activities to assist students to explore their interests, skills and values, along with current industry and occupation information. Students will need to register with their school email address, if they haven’t done so already, to access these resources.
- My career profile: The nine activities in My career profileenable students to explore their interests, skills and values, and generate a personalised list of suggested occupations. From here, they can explore these suggested occupations and decide if they are interested in them as possible future career areas.
- Career bullseyes: The popular Career bullseyesshow the students how occupations relate to their school learning areas – a great place to start if they are unsure about a career area.
- Occupations: The 358 occupation profiles detail the tasks, required skill levels and up-to-date salary and labour market information (sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment).
- Courses: Students can search over 15,000 current higher education and vocational education and training (VET) courses delivered by Australian universities, TAFEs and Registered Training Organisations.
- Industries: The industry profiles include information about 19 different industries, including their employment prospects.
- Career insight: The practical career information in Career insightincludes articles on work experience, apprenticeships, writing resumes, applying for jobs and much more.
Queensland University of Technology Skills Match: This website is university based, and may assist students to find a university course they are interested in pursuing. The results of the mini quiz are QUT specific, but students can then explore these types of courses at other universities in South Australia or around Australia. The Match My Skills Quiz will take students approximately 10 minutes.
Study Work Grow Pathways Hub
In addition to the Pulteney Futures website, which contains information on all things ‘careers’, including job seeking skills, career exploration tools and post-schooling study links, the Pulteney community now also has access to the “Study Work Grow Pulteney Pathways Hub”. This is another great online resource for students when they are planning their next steps and exploring their career options, and I encourage students and parents to explore the site to see the useful information and resources available to them.
Jobs and Skills Atlas for labour market information
Jobs and Skills Atlas, a labour market data tool, allows users to find labour market data on individual regions across Australia and compare it directly to other regions or state and national data. This tool can provide important information to students when they are researching possible future career areas.
Year 12 Tertiary Information Evening – 30 July – save the date!
On Wednesday 30 July, Year 12 students and their parents are invited to attend an information evening, which will be held in Wyatt Hall. Throughout the night, there will be guest speakers from each of the two major SA universities, plus an outline of the SATAC application process will also be given. This is a very informative evening and all Year 12 students who are planning to undertake tertiary study are expected to attend.
University Open Days
Open days at university are a fantastic way for students and their families to explore post-schooling options. Open days are a great opportunity to get a feel for the campus vibe, ask important questions about possible courses, explore facilities and engage with staff, students and faculty members. It’s a time for students to decide whether a particular university will be the right fit for them.
This year, Flinders University (Bedford Park) is open on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 July, Tabor University, Flinders University city campus and the new Adelaide University will be open on Sunday 27 July. I have emailed all Year 10 – 12 students the information and links for them to plan their visits and I strongly encourage all senior school students, who are considering university options, to attend. There are also TAFE information sessions available for students to attend if they wish to pursue courses at TAFE immediately after school. Links to these and other open days are below.Flinders Uni
SAE – Creative media/music courses
ACAP – Applied professional courses (Counselling, Psychology, Law, Business)
AIE – Information Technology courses (game development, 3D animation and visual effects industries)
AIE’s Industry Experience Day (Wednesday 16 July) is a great opportunity for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to learn about the local and international game development, 3D animation and visual effects industries. Students will get the opportunity to learn about the different pathways to get into the industry, what should be in a portfolio and will be able to get creative in practical workshops using industry-standard 3D animation and game development tools.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)
Students wanting to study any vocational or tertiary courses are required to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). It is made up of ten letters and numbers and is a person’s education number for life. Students who do not yet have a USI, are encouraged to create their USI now. A USI is essential for most applications, including university and vocational education and training (VET). The registration process is simple and takes under five minutes, using one form of identification, such as a birth certificate or driver’s licence. All students doing nationally recognised training, including VET in schools and First Aid courses, need a USI to graduate. Higher education students cannot access a Commonwealth Supported Place, receive financial assistance like a HELP loan, or receive their qualifications without a USI.
For students who have already created a USI but may haveforgotten it, can find it easily here. Visit the USI website for more information.
If you have any questions concerning “careers”, please feel free to email me or phone 8216 5553.
