ELC, Term 2 Week 9 2026
Exploring the Historic Buildings of Our School
In Tainmunta, our Term 2 inquiry is about homes, inspired by the children’s interests and conversations. We have been exploring different types of homes, discussing the people who live in them, and discovering that homes are places where we feel safe, sheltered, and connected to our families. Children have also enjoyed sharing stories about their own homes and any renovations taking place within them.
On 28 May, as part of Founders Week, we set off to explore some of the historic buildings around our school. We discovered that Wheaton House was once a family home many years ago, helping us make connections between homes of the past and the homes we know today.
As we made our way to Wheaton House, we were delighted to meet Mr Atterton, our School Principal. He kindly invited us upstairs to visit his office. The children were excited to look around, ask questions, and learn more about his role within our school community.
Our journey then continued to the chapel, where Reverend Paul shared stories about the building and its history. The children listened with interest as they learned about this special place and its connection to Pulteney’s past.
These experiences encouraged the children to think about how buildings can change over time and helped them make connections between homes, community, and the history that surrounds us.
Back in the classroom, the children continued their learning through play in the block and construction area. Using their memories and observations from our walk, they worked together to recreate familiar landmarks, including the chapel and the Pulteney Bridge. As they built, they shared ideas, solved problems, and discussed the different features they remembered. Through this play, the children strengthened their creativity, collaboration, spatial awareness, and understanding of the world around them.
These learning experiences reflect the EYLF’s focus on belonging, community, and learning through play. Children connect their own experiences of home with the history of the school and express their ideas through conversation and construction. It aligns with Reggio Emilia principles by viewing children as capable learners who build understanding through exploration, relationships, and hands‑on experiences. By revisiting their walk through block play, the children used multiple “languages” to represent their thinking, deepening their curiosity, creativity, and connection to place.
