ELC, Term 2 Week 3 2026
Child Protection is a vital part of the learning we engage in with the ELC children. We approach this area through key concepts, while also remaining flexible and responsive to the range of ages and attendance patterns within our classrooms.
This term in Yulti, we explored two important concepts: body bubbles and surprises. Last term, we explored the book My Body Has a Bubble, which introduced children to the idea of personal space through different “layers” of their body bubble. This language is something we continue to use regularly. It not only supports children in navigating social interactions, but also contributes to spatial awareness, an important early numeracy skill.
Using this shared language helps children to understand and communicate their own boundaries—recognising that body bubbles can look different for everyone (in size, comfort, and who is invited into each layer). Last week, children were invited to draw their body bubble. We find that mark-making is a powerful way for children to transfer ideas from their thinking into a visual representation, deepening their understanding.
We also celebrated a very special event in Yulti—Ms Couche’s birthday. Birthdays are incredibly exciting for three-year-olds, and we knew the children would be eager to celebrate. Together, we created a beautiful card, with each child contributing a drawing as a gift.
The challenge was keeping it a surprise in the days leading up to the celebration. This provided a meaningful opportunity to explore the concept of surprises within the Child Protection curriculum. We discussed that sometimes we keep surprises, like a special gift, for a short time, and that these are safe because no one is hurt and the surprise is eventually shared. We contrasted this with unsafe secrets, reinforcing that we do not keep secrets that make us feel uncomfortable or unsure.
In the coming weeks, and in line with both the Child Protection curriculum and the children’s growing interest in caring for baby dolls, we will begin exploring the parts of the body. We appreciate your support in continuing these conversations at home and welcome any questions or discussions.
