Exploring Kindness in Our Tainmunta Learning Community

In Tainmunta, we are exploring what kindness looks like in our learning community – kindness towards each other, the environment and ourselves.

So how can we promote kindness among children?

Young children are concrete learners, and kindness can sometimes be an abstract concept. To help make this learning visible and meaningful, we began by exploring acts of kindness towards our classroom fish.

Before bringing our fish into the classroom, the adults and children researched what fish need to survive and thrive. Part of this research included visiting the fishpond in the junior school, as two of our goldfish came from this pond. As we sat and carefully observed the fish, the children began building a stronger understanding of their natural environment and needs. This experience supported conversations about responsibility, care and respect for living things.

When the fish arrived in our classroom, there was much excitement! The children were very keen to connect with them. In the Early Years Learning Framework, kindness is reflected in Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world. Outcome 2 highlights that “children develop a sense of connectedness to groups and communities and an understanding of their reciprocal rights and responsibilities as active and informed citizens.” As a learning community, we worked together to create a set of shared agreements about how we care for our fish. These agreements reflect the children’s growing understanding of empathy, responsibility and fairness.

Through this experience, the children are developing a deeper understanding of how their actions affect others, even our small aquatic friends, and how kindness can be shown in everyday actions.

Our Fish Care Agreements (Children’s Voices)

Addison: “Take care of the fish.”
Louis: “Fish can’t jump out.”
Jonty: “You can’t bang on the glass.”
Ollie: “If you bang on the window they could die. You can only look at the fish.”
Lewis: “Feed them some food.”
India: “We only feed the fish a little so they don’t get died.”
Rheanna: “Fish can’t eat rocks.”
Lewis: “You can’t put metal in water.”
India: “No Mobilo in the fish tank. Be kind.”
