Adelaide 36’s Breakfast

On Friday 26 May 2023, Pulteney was pleased to host a breakfast with the very inspiring Adelaide 36’s Coach CJ Bruton. All those who attended would agree that it was a great way to start a Friday morning with a message of the importance to remain passionate, dedicated, determined, and believe in what you do.

Basketball

Senior C’s won vs Adelaide High: 38-20

We started off strongly with great energy and all court defense led by Devon Gu and MacKenzie Barr enabling Zac Tirimacco to finish off with some strong drives to the basket.  As the game settled, we dominated the rebounding through Jake Mastersson and Sam Darker but we were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard.  Andy Li controlled the tempo and allowed us to storm home with a dominant last quarter including some nice jump shots from Tyler Phillips and continued pressure and running by Barr right to the end.  A good team effort based on strong defense and team offensive transition.

Senior B’s won vs Adelaide High: 64-18

The team started strongly and played an almost perfect first quarter leading by 20 points at the first break on the back of Michael Trenwith intercepting most passes in the back court and distributing the ball to the best options moving into offence.  Gavin Zhang was lively driving to the basket at will and Harry Daniels was dominating on the boards scooping up anything that missed.  In the second half we adjusted our defense and concentrated on running our offensive sets which saw Andy Li, Ben Hancock and Devon Gu make a big contribution allowing the team to run out comfortable victors.

Senior A’s won vs Adelaide High: 45-33

We went into this game without two of our senior players and our new look starting five took a little time to settle.  Our opponents played at a high intensity and challenged us for much of the game.  Julian Grobelski ran our offensive sets well and made some important baskets when we were struggling to score in the early going and then James Apostolakos took over and paced us for the rest of the game with 22 points.  We struggled to contain our opponents on the drive which also led to our big men getting into foul trouble.  Morgan Young and Aidan Fitzpatrick were strong in important stages, and this was complimented by some athletic efforts from Will Evans at both ends of the floor.  Finn Evans was important for us with some telling defensive possessions and showed poise to help settle us down the home stretch with Harry Daniels and Gavin Zhang providing some much-needed intensity and hustle throughout the game.

Middle C’s won 61-25 vs Adelaide High

The C’s dominated once again, the boys can generate a lot of stops on the defensive end, then get out & run. Their ball movement and speed in transition left Adelaide High in their tracks & the game never looked like it would be close. Josh Allen went for a stretch where he could not miss, and the passing & crafty moves from Liam Kelsh & Max Ormsby helped the team score in bunches.

Middle B’s won approximately 66-30 vs Adelaide High

The B’s had a huge bounce back from last week’s loss and came out firing in the first quarter, leading 23-4 at quarter time. Sam O’Loughlin was too big & too good for the Adelaide High defence, scoring at will. While James Lee dominated the game with pressure, athleticism & smooth touch. Leon Gao was also lightning quick, torching players up & down the court.

Middle A’s lost approximately 55-40 vs Adelaide High

The A’s unfortunately went down to a strong Adelaide High side, they had a very strong ball handling guard & a couple big guys who really pushed us around & got the better of us. Struggling to contain their bigs 1-on-1 and struggle to rebound the ball, we unfortunately couldn’t come away with the win.

Jacob Stojsavljevic defended well, moved the ball & hit some timely 3’s down the stretch to keep us in the game. Zack Apostolakos & Jayden Turner worked hard inside against their bigs, with Zack dominating in the paint offensively and Jayden pulling down some huge rebounds to keep us in the fight.

Middle D’s drew 23-23 vs PAC

This was a nail-biting game, after holding a 9-point lead going into the 4th, PAC came storming home and nearly took the game away from us. The last quarter was intense, with diving efforts for balls out of bounds from Oli Tonkin-Phanoulas and Marcus Ko running his heart out, the boys managed to hold on for a draw. Arlo Jarman was hot with his shooting & Sam Smid dominated rebounds and the game with his energy & athleticism.

Middle E’s lost 55-18 vs PAC

Middle E’s went down to the hands of another PAC side, with strong performances from Axel Vassos with some strong shooting, Oli Seeliger slicing through the defence. Hugh Rogers using his size & strength on the boards, the boys battled all game but unfortunately PAC were just too good on the day.

Football

Our Senior and Middle boys started their seasons off last Wednesday night.

The 1st XVIII boys had strong win against Urrbrae with 98 – 2. With that big of a win all played an important role in the victory. We had a number of debutants – Lachlan Ranaldo, Fred Hawkes, James Penberthy, Will and Finn Evans who handled the step up with ease.

Our 2nd XVIII travelled down to Woodcroft where it was a tough slog but all boys played with passion and team work. We thank those lads that helped with numbers so we could have a game. Elliot Sage Hoff was the standout player with strong support from Julian Grobelski.

The Middle boys played at home against Blackfriars where they went down by 6 goals in a tight game for the most part. Coach Brad highlighted Angas Moyse, Adam Brownbill and Eli Morrow as our best contributors.

Both our girls’ teams had a bye but will be back on deck this Friday at Pulteney.

Senior Boys Knockout:

Our Senior boys had to back up on Thursday in a round robin competition which Pulteney hosted against Golden Grove, Reynella East and Victor Harbor.

Pulteney won the first game convincingly against Golden Grove winning 37-9. We then backed up against a strong Reynella East team who ultimately moved through the next round 24-44.

Our last game was a thriller but, in the end, we lost to Victor Harbor 14-23.

In tough, wet and trying conditions coach Chris Clements was extremely happy with the boys attitude and fight. There was a lot to like about how the group has progressed this year and we look forward to a competitive year.

Hockey

Pulteney played St John’s in the Middle School and Immanuel in the seniors this week. We fell short in two incredibly competitive and close games this week.

We would like to thank all the students that assisted by playing up or filled in to support the hockey team with several participants in the musical. This is a testament to the positive culture that is continuing to grow in our Hockey Program.

Open – Immanuel 3 to PGS 1
Middle – St John’s 2 to PGS 1

Special Mention: Angus Alsop, Raphael Storer and Lorenzo Dal Cin.

Unfortunately, Walford forfeited against the Pulteney Girls’ team on Wednesday night. However, that did not stop the parents, supporters and coaches having a kick for the afternoon.

Table Tennis

This week we had a mixture of results in Table Tennis, against St Peters.

Opens Matches Pulteney 5 to St Peters 12

Middle A drew 10 matches each

Total sets resulted in Pulteney 32 to St Peters 39.

Our Middle B 11- 9 with a win to St Peters.

Outstanding job done by all participants.

Volleyball

Congratulations to the Junior League Volleyball players who were selected to participate in the Year 9/10 Statewide Carnival. All participants played incredibly well throughout the day with minimal break. Unfortunately, we just missed out on proceeding to the second round. All students should be proud of the efforts they gave throughout the day. The girls finished 2nd and the boys finished 3rd.

Brad Dalglish – Basketball / Volleyball
Coaches Pulteney Year 8/9 AFL Team

I have been employed as a Sports Coach at Pulteney since the start of the school year, coaching within the Junior School in basketball, volleyball and now in football (Year 8/9).

The School has been a fantastic environment to be a part of as has the support from parents, other coaches, players and of course the management team. I am thoroughly enjoying the experience.

Being a coach can be tough at times, but with the support of the School I have been able to learn and develop so much within a short period of time and know I have learnt just as much as the students.

I believe the key to successful coaching is to show genuine care and be a role model for the students you coach, which has been made easier with such a great support network here at Pulteney.

I am passionate about developing young people through sport and working together with the entire Pulteney community. I believe we are well and truly on our way to achieving an inclusive and productive sporting program throughout the School.
